A Brief Meditation on Cider Doughnuts

The notion that moderation is the key to a healthy, balanced life isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s an important one to remember this time of year… and then politely disregard when a dozen piping-hot, sugar-encrusted cider doughnuts from your favorite local apple orchard are placed in front of you.
With the promise of holiday feasts loitering right around the corner, it’s easy to get wrapped up in pre-emptive strikes against the inevitable onslaught of gravy-drenched calories, whether it’s dieting or ramped-up workout plans or rehearsing saying, “No, thanks” to second helpings in front of a mirror (let’s face it, it’s probably all three). But when cider doughnuts are called into question, all bets are off. Maybe this is a result of generation after generation of born, bred, and corn-fed Rockfordians treating visits to the orchard (and the ensuing doughnut annihilation) as if it were an annual spiritual awakening. Maybe it’s because those delightfully greasy, cider-spiked fried dough rings are the only tangible medium through which mere mortals reach gastronomic Nirvana. Or maybe, cider doughnuts are just that good. Whatever your justification, just say “yes” to cider doughnuts this fall.
